Lobo Round-Up: 2025 Football Schedule Released

The University of New Mexico Lobos are set for an action-packed 2025 football season, bringing six home games to Albuquerque under the leadership of new head coach Jason Eck. Fans can look forward to thrilling matchups against rivals, marquee non-conference opponents throughout the season.

A Home Slate to Remember

The Lobos will host six games at University Stadium, including a must-watch rivalry game against New Mexico State. Other home opponents include Idaho State, Nevada, Utah State, Colorado State, and San Diego State. The road schedule will take UNM to face national powerhouses Michigan and UCLA, along with key Mountain West battles at San Jose State, Boise State, UNLV, and Air Force.

Breaking Down the 2025 Schedule

The Lobos open their season with three non-conference games, including a historic first-ever trip to the Big House to face Michigan on August 30. The home opener follows on September 6 against Idaho State, a familiar foe for Coach Eck from his previous coaching tenure. The team will then travel to UCLA for their second-ever meeting with the Bruins on September 13.

The Rio Grande Rivalry game against New Mexico State on September 27 will kick off a grueling stretch of six consecutive games. Mountain West play begins with two road tests at San Jose State (October 4) and defending conference champion Boise State (October 11). The Lobos return home for back-to-back games against Nevada (October 18) and Utah State (October 25), setting up a compelling faceoff against former head coach Bronco Mendenhall.

The final stretch includes a road trip to UNLV (November 1) before a bye week. The Lobos then play two of their last three games at home, hosting Colorado State (November 15) and San Diego State (November 29), with a road contest at Air Force (November 22) sandwiched in between.

The schedule’s national television details, including potential non-Saturday games, will be finalized in the coming months.

Lobos Baseball Splits Weekend Series with Northern Colorado

The New Mexico Lobos baseball team showcased explosive offense in their home-opening weekend series against Northern Colorado but had to battle hard to secure a split.

In Friday’s opener, UNM nearly staged a late comeback but fell 16-15 despite an impressive 23-hit performance. The Lobos’ relief pitching locked down the final four innings, with Josh Barnhouse striking out three and keeping the Bears scoreless. Six Lobos recorded three hits each, with Ethan Ott leading the team with four RBIs.

Game Two on Saturday saw an offensive breakout, as UNM blasted five home runs en route to a commanding 13-4 victory. Jordy Oriach, Ethan Ott, Akili Carris, Will Asby, and Caleb Herd all homered, marking the first long balls of the season for each. Diego Alvarez delivered a stellar six-inning performance on the mound, shutting out UNC in his final three frames to earn his first win of the year.

Sunday’s finale secured the series split with a 12-7 Lobos win. An early eight-run surge put UNM in control, and late homers from Khalil Walker and Oriach sealed the victory. Oriach finished the weekend batting .632, with two home runs and 10 runs scored, while Carris drove in 11 RBIs across the series.

With a 4-4 record, the Lobos look to build momentum in their next series as they aim to climb the Mountain West standings.

Lobos Tennis Battles to 4-3 Record After Split in Tennessee

New Mexico men’s tennis took to the road for two competitive matchups, securing a dominant 6-1 win over South Alabama before narrowly falling 4-2 to No. 45 Middle Tennessee State.

Against South Alabama, the Lobos clinched the doubles point with a thrilling 7-6 tiebreaker win from No. 51-ranked Aram Noroozian and Georgio Samaha. The momentum carried into singles play, with Noroozian, Avery Tallakson, Aditya Balkesar, Daniil Kakhniuk, and Dario Ciobotaru all winning their matches in straight sets.

Against Middle Tennessee, the Lobos started strong by claiming the doubles point but couldn’t maintain the edge in singles play. Two three-set losses proved costly as the team fell just short.

Now sitting at 4-4 on the season, UNM turns its attention to a showdown with No. 55 Utah, aiming to bounce back with another strong performance.

Unscored Event sees Lobos go Third

The New Mexico Lobos delivered two standout performances in the Men’s and Women’s Distance Medley Relays at the Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday, marking their final competition before next week’s Mountain West Indoor Championships.

In the men’s DMR, UNM’s team of Iker Sanchez (1200m), Brodie Young (400m), Dylan Burrows (800m), and Mathew Kosgei (1600m) placed 10th overall with a time of 9:31.43—ranking No. 21 nationally and No. 5 in UNM history.

On the women’s side, Alice Seguin (1200m), Rebecca Grieve (400m), Judy Rono (800m), and Pamela Kosgei (1600m) combined for a time of 11:01.06, finishing 6.58 seconds behind UNM’s top mark set last weekend in Seattle. Their performance ranks No. 21 nationally on the NCAA Indoor Qualifying list and sixth in UNM history.

Individually, Marion Jepngetich set a new collegiate best in the women’s mile, clocking in at 4:42.60 for a second-place finish, while Luke Cunningham took 11th in the men’s mile with a time of 4:14.19.

Lobo Track led by Broughton

Ellie Broughton continued her stellar run at the Credit Union 1 Mountain West Championship, nearly setting a school record in the 400 IM and leading the Lobos on Day Three of the competition. The meet concludes tomorrow with seven final events.

The Lobos currently sit in ninth place with 311 points, 97 ahead of San Jose State and just 38 behind eighth-place Air Force. San Diego State leads with 835 points, aiming for its sixth title in seven years.

Broughton’s preliminary 400 IM time of 4:21.30 was a personal best, moving her up to No. 6 on UNM’s all-time list. Though she missed the A-Final by just 0.03 seconds, she dominated the B-Final, improving by nearly two seconds (4:19.39) to claim victory.

Senior Katy McCarter also contributed, finishing seventh in the 100-yard backstroke C-Final with a time of 56.77, moving up a spot from her qualifying position.

The Lobos’ 200-yard freestyle relay, anchored by McCarter, finished eighth with a time of 1:32.68, their best performance in the event since 2020.

In a non-scoring event, UNM secured third place in the team diving competition.

Lobo Women Guided past USU by Cumber

Viané Cumber made her presence felt at The Pit, leading the Lobos with 20 points—including 10 in the fourth quarter—as UNM secured a 73-65 victory over Utah State on Saturday.

It was Cumber’s eighth 20-point game this season and the 15th time in her career she has hit five or more three-pointers. She finished 5-for-9 from beyond the arc.

Four Lobos scored in double figures, with Joana Magalhães adding 14, Destinee Hooks 12, and Nayli Padilla 10. Hulda Joaquim grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds while senior Amhyia Moreland recorded four blocks—her 12th multi-block game of the season.

Despite trailing 53-48 entering the fourth quarter, the Lobos turned the game around with a dominant 25-12 run. Cumber’s back-to-back threes helped UNM take control, and her final three-pointer, along with two free throws from Padilla, sealed the win.

The victory extended UNM’s winning streak over Utah State to 17 games. The Lobos improved to 16-12 overall and 9-6 in conference play, with three regular-season MW games remaining.

Lobo Softball Splits in Texas

The Lobos exploded for 13 runs in the fifth inning against Texas Southern, securing a 13-3 run-rule victory on Sunday morning.

After a quiet start, Ashley Archuleta’s three-run homer and Keyannah Chavez’s two-run double highlighted a monster inning where 18 Lobos stepped up to the plate. Katherine Brunner also contributed, finishing 2-for-2 with three RBIs.

McKenna Guest was stellar in relief, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings while striking out six and allowing no hits. She entered in the first inning with UNM trailing 3-0 and proceeded to retire eight straight batters.

In Game 2, a leadoff home run in the first inning proved decisive as the Lobos fell 2-0 to Tarleton State. Despite solid pitching performances from Natalie Fritz and Lexi Atcitty, UNM was unable to generate enough offense.

The Lobos now shift their focus to the Bulldog Invitational, hosted by Mississippi State, starting Feb. 28.

The Lobos displayed an offensive surge in Saturday’s doubleheader, scoring 19 runs on 22 hits, including 11 for extra bases. They secured a 10-5 win over Texas Southern but fell short in a 10-9 loss to North Dakota.

Jessica DeLeon (five RBIs) and Ashley Archuleta (four hits, including two triples and a double) led the charge. Ella Dawson hit a grand slam, while Sydney Carithers and DeLeon also homered.

In Game 1, DeLeon’s three-run homer set the tone early, while Archuleta, Vasquez-Dickson, and Williams each added doubles to extend the lead. Fritz struck out seven in a strong start.

Game 2 saw the Lobos build a lead before North Dakota rallied in the seventh. Despite strong performances at the plate, UNM couldn’t hold on, splitting the day’s games.

The Lobos continue their road trip at the Bulldog Invitational later this week.
